Public Art Call . The City of Missoula Public Art Committee invites artists residing in Missoula County to apply for a public art project to create art on 10 traffic signal boxes (TSB) located throughout Missoula. The goal of the project is to use local traffic signal boxes as "canvases." The Missoula TSB project has been patterned after those implemented with great success by communities throughout the United States and around the world Artists have colorfully and creatively transformed signal boxes, usually painted gray, in cities ranging from Dublin, Ireland, to Columbia, Missouri. Honoring Frog . I have had uncomfortable feelings talking about this, because I didn't know him at all. But all my friends are mourning right now for a very dear friend who passed away far too early. Here's Jonas Eduin from the Missoula Independant: "Last week, the planet and everyone upon it suffered a great loss. Last Thursday the ocean stole away a noble soul. The frigid water brought an early end to a life spent helping people, finding less destructive ways to live and promoting fairness and peace. Last week, my friend Brian “Frog” Gharst was taken behind the veil, to a place from which we’re forbidden." I haven't verified this, but if my memory serves me correctly, Frog helped advise the creation of the Bookmobile. Its been difficult to paint it or look at it or think about that fact. I have felt unsure how to express this... i am so very sad for my heartbroken friends. Please read Jonas' article, and just honor Frog, and Frog's good friends and family, with me. http://www.missoulanews.com/index.cfm?do=article.details&id=EFEEAAE0-14D1-1357-9C710DDF9B73DE5A And I highly recommend listening to Martin Prechtel talk about Grief and Praise: http://www.torrentz.com/5a9c7880973731d230d020d5556436a7954303ed . I'm not sure if that's a safe source so download at your own risk, search for it elsewhere, or email me for a copy. If you can afford to, buy one from Martin Prechtel's website. It's very good, and was transformative for me at a certain point in my life to listen to it. Its touched some really hard edged cynical people that I made listen to it, so I really think if you want to hear a different spin on how cultures handle grief, and want some direction or something with your grief, you might find some inspiration there. Seeking Teen Takeover .CALLING ALL YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS, ARTISTS, WRITERS, and FUTURE PUBLISHERS: I hereby invite teens ages 14- 18 to take over Slumgullion. Learn the history of small presses, and how to start one yourself via a week-long internship-style class at the ZACC. During the week, we'll create one anthology and at least one personal project ( your own book of your own comic, poetry, drawings, or misc. content.). Bring along work that you have already created, but also be ready to create fresh work. On Saturday morning we take the Bicycle-powered bookmobile to the Saturday Market and hawk your wares like small press publishers have done since the dawning of the printing press. You will get the profits from whatever you sell, just like all other ZACC artists. You will also be able to place your book/zine in the ZACC shop, and on the Slumgullion Etsy website (ZACC shop and Etsy site require a 20% commission). Consider this week a training for possible future Slumgullion takeovers on your own. Yes. If you do well in this class and prove trustworthy, you can use the bookmobile other times, and you will have the opportunity to be a main organizer for Slumgullion. Announcing: KIDS COLLEGE .Slumgullion is integrating into the Zootown Arts Community Center, and I am busy at work developing new programming and making the Printshop a reality. Soon, this website is going to link up more with the ZACC one. Also, I want to announce our new Afterschool program at the ZACC. It's a chance for kids of all ages to make zines and comics (and all the things that go along with that like poetry, journalism, and drawing). For teens, we have Kid's College, an internship program that allows you to create art at your own level and learn how to teach and work on collaborative projects as well. Please contact me at info at .....slumgullion dot org or sign up at www.zootownarts.com! (if you don't see the signup sheet, call 549-7555 to register!) Posted on 3-16-09 by debby | [0] comments
